Rolf Retz-Schmidt was born to a Norwegian mother and a German father in Stavanger, Norway. He grew up in a Protestant home. In 1939 the family moved to Germany, initially to Berlin.
Further stations were Dresden, Lübeck and finally from 1946 Hamburg-Rahlstedt, which became his second home. There he completed his schooling in 1949 with the Abitur.
From 1949 to 1952 he was trained at the Hamburger Baukreis. His teachers included Arnold Fiedler and Hans Martin Tibor. Rolf Retz-Schmidt's work was initially influenced by Impressionism, Cubism and Expressionism. Throughout his creative period, the cosmos was always a fascinating subject for him.
From 1955 he exhibited works on this subject. His works in the period from 1955 to 1958 belong to the Informal or assigned to tachism. Christian mysticism and religion influenced the artist's work as well as other cultures, e. The Aztecs, Buddhists and Maya. Since 1960 he has created numerous picture cycles, among others on the themes of towers, apocalypse, circles, light dances, horizons, icons and world formula. In 1963, for example, he created a picture cycle Cosmic Parables with pen drawings in circular format. These drawings were printed on a reduced scale in 1983 and presented in a cassette together with in-depth texts on the occasion of the exhibition Cosmic Parabolas in the Ratingen City Museum in 1984. His numerous trips, including to Norway, Palestine, the Balkans, Tunisia and Djerba, had a major influence on his work. He also dealt with the city of Hamburg and its port in his works.
In the 1980s he lived in Ratingen for a while. As he grew older, his work became more and more a visual expression of his cosmic and Christian religious beliefs.
